CND

The Chief Data and Artificial Intelligence Officer ensures that data is visible, accessible, understandable, linked, trustworthy, interoperable, and secured across the Department of the Air Force's IT enterprise. It provides guidance on leveraging data and AI to unlock new insights, drive innovation, and support more informed decision-making. CND is responsible for:

  • Setting strategic direction and guidance for data management throughout its lifecycle
  • Developing policies and issuing guidance to ensure data governance across the Department
  • Assessing the Department's ability to leverage data as a strategic asset to inform digital modernization strategies
  • Fostering a collaborative data-driven environment to support informed decision-making
  • Developing AI policy and governance frameworks
  • Implementing AI solutions to support missions and operations
  • Collaborating with other organizations to advance AI research and development

CNS

The Directorate of Enterprise Information Technology provides guidance, oversight, and expertise to ensure that information technology is used effectively and efficiently to support the Department's objectives. CNS leads the Department's information technology management and IT innovation to achieve its objectives. CNS ensures that information technology enhances the Department's operations, improves efficiency, and supports 680K Airmen and Guardians. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements technology policies and procedures
  • Oversees DAF Enterprise IT portfolios, investments, and budgeting
  • Provides expert advice on technology matters to support mission modernization
  • Collaborates with other organizations to ensure that technology aligns with the Department's overall mission and goals
  • Operates as the Functional Manager for the Communications and Information/Cyber civilian career field, overseeing career field management, talent management, and force development for 11.3K civilian cyber and IT positions

CNZ

The Chief Information Security Officer safeguards the Department's digital assets and ensures the security of the Department's information technology systems. CNZ protects the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of sensitive information, while supporting the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Space Force missions. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Provides oversight and policy guidance for cybersecurity and risk management
  • Develops, implements, and enforces cybersecurity policies, standards, and guidelines
  • Ensures compliance with congressional mandates, statutory requirements, and departmental regulations
  • Manages governance and compliance frameworks to mitigate risk and protect DAF systems
  • Leads efforts to ensure interoperability with other Department of Defense agencies
  • Recommends authorizing officials for all DAF information systems to ensure their security and integrity
  • Tracks and ensures DAF compliance with information resources management, public laws and higher-echelon publications and policies 

CTO

The Chief Technology Officer advises the CIO on cybersecurity and IT emerging technology, enterprise architecture, enterprise infrastructure, and strategy including identifying short- and long-term goals of Department-wide cybersecurity and IT initiatives. The CTO provides executive and senior level technical leadership, direction and oversight of Department-wide large-scale IT issues and initiatives, ensuring the integrity, interoperability, supportability, and cost-effectiveness of the Department’s IT capabilities. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develops and maintains the technical vision and strategy that aligns with the Department's overall mission and goals
  • Develops and maintains the DAF's enterprise architecture, including the development of architecture products such as models, diagrams, and documentation
  • Establishes and enforces technical standards and governance policies across the Department
  • Ensures the awareness, compliance, and enforcement of the Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF), including providing guidance and support to DAF organizations on the development and use of DoDAF-compliant architectures, and ensuring that all IT systems and initiatives are aligned with DAF Information Technology and Data standards to enable collaboration and achieve the Department's mission and goals
  • Builds and maintains partnerships with other government agencies, industry partners, and academia, to leverage their expertise and capabilities, and to stay informed about emerging technologies and trends
  • Identifies and mitigates technical risks across the Department, including cybersecurity risks, and ensuring the security & resiliency of the Department's IT infrastructure
