2026 Department of War Artificial Intelligence Strategy
Published Monday, January 12, 2026, the Department of War (DoW) Artificial Intelligence Strategy outlines the department's plan to accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence to ensure U.S. warfighters maintain a decisive advantage on the battlefield. The Strategy was developed by the DoW's Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) and describes the approach to fielding AI-powered capabilities that increase the speed and accuracy of operational decisions, thereby improving the lethality and effectiveness of every warfighter.
This Strategy's release is in alignment with "America's AI Action Plan," which establishes a national vision for winning the global race for AI dominance. It is, therefore, also described as the DoW’s strategy to shift from discussing the potential of AI to delivering mission-enhancing outcomes that provide a decisive advantage to warfighters.
2023 Department of Defense Data, Analytics, and Artificial Intelligence Adoption Strategy
Published Thursday, November 2, 2023, the DoD Data, Analytics, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Adoption Strategy unifies unifying previous strategic data, AI, and analytics guidance and enables stronger alignment and synchronization to scale advanced capabilities for use across the enterprise. The Strategy was developed by the DoD Chief Digital and AI Office and describes the approach to improving the organizational environment within which DoD leaders and warfighters will be able to make rapid, well-informed decisions by expertly leveraging high-quality data, advanced analytics, and AI for enduring decision advantage.
This Strategy's release immediately follows the issuance of Executive Order 14110 Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence on Monday, October 30th. It is, therefore, also described as DoD’s Strategy to accelerate the adoption of advanced artificial intelligence capabilities to ensure U.S. warfighters maintain decision superiority on the battlefield for years to come.
2021 Department of Defense Data Decrees
Published in a memorandum from the Deputy Secretary of Defense on May 10, 2021, the DoD Data Decrees were issued to make the Department's data more visible, accessible, and understandable. The decrees provide five key directives for managing the military's data to create a decision advantage from the boardroom to the battlefield. These include maximizing data sharing, publishing data assets to a federated catalog, using automated interfaces, storing data in a platform-agnostic manner, and implementing robust security best practices.
